The ideal application

Since the introduction of the anti-discrimination law, there is no longer any need to attach a photo to the application. However, it is still advisable to attach an application photo to the application because, as everyone knows, a photo says more than a thousand words. This does not mean that the viewer has to find you particularly attractive. Rather, it’s about your appearance having to fit the desired position. The photo has to convey an overall coherent picture of you.

Details make the difference

Even very fine details can make the difference between a perfect and a less good application photo. An example of this is the smile. Also, it makes a difference whether your hair is tidy or not and you should make sure your clothes are free of lint and stains. Hair is also not on the clothes. Likewise, the shirt should be free of wrinkles. A badly tied tie and contrasts between the make-up on the neck and face are also part of the no-gos. The same applies to jewelry. This should be filed before the photo shoot.

It is also important that you use a current picture of you. If you do not look like it is in the picture, you’ll notice it in the interview at the latest, which can negatively impact your credibility.

Useful tips for application photo

The perfect application photo shows the candidate in half portrait, while the shoulder should make up a maximum of one fifth of the image. Women should dust off their face so that the face does not shine on the picture and the men should pay attention to it. The following is a closer look at these tips.

The right clothes

The clothes have to be professional, which means that they should fit the desired job. For example, if you want to apply to a bank or similar industry, you should wear a suit. Female applicants increase their chances further by not luring with feminine charms but radiating a certain dose of masculinity. Masculinity in this case means a dark trouser suit with a plain, light blouse. As a result, the applicant is simply more assertive and serious.

And what about the hair?

Even the hair can substantiate this impression: Studies have shown that women with raised or combed hair arrive better with staff than women with an open wave mane. Further studies have shown that short-haired women are more self-confident and intelligent. Long, dark curls seem naive and uncertain to the majority. Sounds a bit discriminatory, but that’s just how psychology works.

As far as male candidates are concerned, there are “prejudices” about hair: Scientists have found that men with bald or half-bald heads are much less likely to be interviewed. According to several studies, a lack of head hair is also evidence of a lack of creativity and a diminished career orientation.

Make up

But let’s come back to the female applicants once again. Make-up and make-up should underline or weaken certain facial features. When applying for a job, make sure that the make-up and make-up are not too intrusive.

Men can benefit from make-up, e.g. by laminating her double chin or by matting the hairline. Even a shiny nose does not belong on the photo, so that in such a case, make-up can be used. The same applies to dark circles, pimples and redness.

The right background

Every smile, every tie, and every face, no matter how beautiful, does not really stand out if the background is not right. This is an aspect that is underestimated or simply forgotten by many lay people. The background is of essential importance to the overall effect of the picture. If the background motif, the colors and / or the contrast are chosen incorrectly, a discordant image is created. It is important to avoid this! A neutral area must be chosen, i. Objects are not part of the picture and ideally the background matches the clothes. Too much contrast must be avoided otherwise the face can look very pale.

Pictures from the machine are a no-go!

The application form should be created professionally, i. it must not come from the vending machine nor have it been taken during leisure time. This is simply cheap and ensures that “you” are sorted out directly. Better spend a little more money and have the portrait photo (never a full body shot!) Made by a professional photographer. It’s best to let you know a few examples in advance, otherwise the photographer might take a picture of you that does not fit your needs. Make sure the professional that the picture should be a candid photo!

The right format

As far as the size of the picture is concerned, you should choose a format of 6 x 4 cm, but a 9 x 6 cm picture is fine. All other sizes are less suitable for a job application photo. In addition, if possible, a portrait format should be selected. With a photo taken in landscape mode, you will notice more, but you have to pay more attention to this than is already the case. If you would like to have an application picture in landscape format, ask a professional and make sure that he knows what he is talking about.

Black and white or in color?

And then there is the question of whether the picture should be colored or black and white. This can be said: that is a matter of taste. Although monochrome images look more elegant, they can also seem inappropriate or artificial. For a square face, you should choose a color photo, because on black and white images edged faces look even tougher. In addition, color photographs i.d.R. authentic. For color photos, you must also pay attention to the right clothing, which must match the background, etc. (see above). For a black-and-white photo, contrast and shape are the most important factors. It may be worth it if you simply have both types of application photo made and ask your friends and family for advice before submitting the application with your application photo. They can advise you on which picture you look more sympathetic and more professional, and so on.

Where does the application form belong?

Before you submit the application including the photo, you must place the application photo correctly on your application: The photo belongs to the first page of the CV above the first line. Whether right or left, depends on which direction your nose points. Note: your nose should look into the application and not outward show and if your application includes a cover sheet, the application photo belongs to this.

More tips

The application form is never attached with a paper clip. Instead, you should use a glue stick. If you want to integrate the image digitally in your application, you should make sure that it has a high quality. Also, if you attach the application photo with a glue stick, you should write down your name on the back. So the people responsible can assign your face to your application if the glue stick loses its effect when you look through the applications.
